Photographing Fog on the Mamiya RB67
Being able to photograph foggy woodland scenes with my Mamiya RB67 was such a treat for me! I love the incredible amount of detail that my favourite medium format camera was able to capture on 120 film, and pairing the RB67 up with a roll of Kodak Tri-X 400 was just perfect.
We don't get a lot of fog around here, so it's always a special moment when we do. Luckily for me, fog was in the forecast, so I prepared my gear bag ahead of time, and was able to run out the door and right into the woods.
What was really interesting was the entirely new perspective the fog gave me in an area I know very well. I'm not entirely sure I did it justice, but it was fun trying, and I'm really hoping I'll g...

My New Studio
Просмотров 1,8 тыс.4 месяца назад
I've dreamed of having my own studio for a while, but the dream always felt so far away. I randomly saw an ad for this space on January 1, 2024, and I just knew I had to take the chance. My vision for the studio isn't fully clear yet, but I'm excited to have a place where I can work, create, and have fun. I'm hoping to be able to make more videos for the channel here, and I have lots of project...
Before the Storms with the Mamiya RB67- Spring 2023

I don't usually get a lot of time to shoot in the woods in the spring months, so it was such a treat to get to spend some time amongst the trees with my Mamiya RB67! To me, medium format film and woodland photography are a match made in heaven, even when I'm being attacked by mosquitos non-stop in May! The atmosphere was lovely that morning, and the woods were so peaceful, it was hard to believ...
A Peaceful Afternoon With the Mamiya RB67 - Spring 2023
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Any chance I have to get outside with the Mamiya RB67 is one I will always take. Spending a relaxing afternoon capturing spring details in the woods on medium format film is a great way to spend a day, whether I make my best work or not. Sometimes I just need the time to wander around, soak in the day, and photograph what captures my eye, rather than always focusing on getting the "good shots"....
Back at it with the Mamiya RB67 - Spring 2023

Creating images with the Mamiya RB67 in the woods during the spring months is one of my favourite things to do. I find the process of shooting on medium format film to be so peaceful, and I love searching for subjects at a time filled with hope as the woods renews itself for another year. I don't often use the Mamiya RB67 hand-held, but here it really allowed me to get up close and personal wit...
Photographing Dirt Roads with the Rolleiflex 2.8e
Просмотров 11 тыс.Год назад
My new-to-me Rolleiflex 2.8e is quickly becoming my favourite TLR camera! When it comes to shooting 6x6 on medium format film, I still love my Yashica-Mat 124g, but the Rollei is hands-down on a different level, and when paired with a roll of Kentmere 400 in 120, it's the perfect match! I've been feeling a little cooped up lately, but now that the snow has melted and spring has begun, I thought...
Reveni Labs Spot Meter - 1 Year Review

I've been using the Reveni Labs Spot Meter as my main light meter for 1 year now, and thought it was the perfect time to do a review! It's the perfect replacement to my broken Soligor Spot Sensor II, as when it was working it simply took up too much...
My Last Large Format Photographs of the Year - 2022 Fall Photo Series Ep 3

Learning how to shoot large format photography has had its ups and downs, which is to be expected when starting out with a new film format. I have been enjoying the experience of photographing with my Intrepid 4x5 Mk5, and pairing it with sheets of Kodak Ektar 100 for the fall woodland scenes was a perfect match. While I do already see the areas in which I'd like to work harder to improve my sk...
Large Format is Changing How I Photograph - 2022 Fall Photo Series Ep 2

I have been wanting to learn how to do large format photography for a long time. I have always felt that the 4x5 format is the perfect way to photograph the subjects I find in the woods, allowing me to capture every tiny detail. This past fall was a great time to put my theory to the test, so I headed out into the woods with only my Intrepid 4x5 Mk5 and 4 sheets of Kodak Ektar 100 in my bag. Wh...

For this year's Fall Photo Series, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to get better acquainted with the Intrepid 4x5 MK5! Deciding to limit myself to one camera and one film type, I packed my bag with sheets of my favourite colour film, Kodak Ektar 100, to see if I like it as much as I do in 35mm or 120. Fall is one of my favourite times of the year to photograph in the woods, and taking ...

If you really want to make a space sublime, buy a few owens corning 703 acoustic mats. Two, 2x4 foot panels, put into frames and covered with whatever you choose, will take much of the reverberating sound out of that room. Its a small investment but will pay for itself over time, as it will add much, much peace to your space. Love the channel btw. I'm sitting at home atm waiting for a roll of 35mm to dry so I can scan them.

I liked the concept but it was not useful as a spotmeter for my large format film use. I was never sure the meter was looking directly at what I was trying to measure AND the spot area is too large (larger than the circle in the meter). In certain situations, it erred by two stops compared to my conventional spotmeters or the spotmeter setting in my digital cameras. I since found that there are light meter and spot meter apps for smartphones that are (IMO) easier to use and more accurate. AND since I have my phone with me all the time, I use that and no longer carry a light meter at all. OTOH, I'll admit that if my life depended on a perfectly exposed photo, I'd use a conventional spot meter like the Pentax V or Digital model, a Minolta Spotmeter F, or a current Sekonic! ;)

That's an awesome and funky film stock. And you certainly made good use of it with your choice of subject matter and compositions. That reminds me of the colour infrared slide film I shot years ago (that was discontinued long ago.) It had to be loaded in the dark. I shot one roll with a yellow filter and it made vegetation turn pink. With that film stock long gone, I might look into getting a roll of Lomochrome Purple as a kind of substitute.

I really like these intimate close ups of the flora. Very nice attention to detail. Also very good audio quality from that lapel mic. Out of curiosity, do you manually set the recording levels for audio or do you leave it on automatic?

  • @anzaeria

I really like the detail in those images. And it sounds like you got an awesome bargain with the 124G. I got a really good deal on a Yashica D TLR with Yashinon lenses via eBay. The back of the camera was painted orange due to it previously belonging to a school. Very few people bid on that camera. I guess not many people want a camera with an orange back! Well I didn't mind. I got the winning bid with US$30. And it cost another $30 for international postage. The camera worked perfectly and I had a lab print a big enlargement of a landscape image that I had shot with this TLR which I submitted to an art exhibition. Unfortunately, I haven't used this camera for a few years and the shutter is sticking with the slower speeds. I recently put some film through it again and just stuck to the faster shutter speeds.

Great compositions and choice of subject matter. And the clarity and detail look amazing on 4 x 5. I used to shoot 6 x 7cm 120 film myself years ago (with a Koni Omega Rapid.) It allowed me to capture some beautiful images of nature but unfortunately, it wasn't a very reliable camera at times. I missed out on some photos due to the camera refusing to cooperate. I once took a long journey by train to shoot a landscape in the late afternoon light but came back empty handed because the cable release wouldn't fire. I would like to get into large format one day and the Intrepid looks like a good choice for those who don't want to spend a huge amount of cash on something like a Wista.

  • @anzaeria

Those images are beautiful with the Fall colours. The largest film I have shot is 6 x 7cm. Though looking at your photos is something else. The clarity and detail really leap off my computer monitor. As much as I would like to shoot colour 4 x 5 film, I'll have to settle on B&W. The cost of colour sheet film here in Australia is insane.

I know I'm 6 years late to the video but the lenses are not exactly the same. The MC lens has better mid tone resolution and the F.Zuiko has more dramatic contrast ime with mine. Not sure if you mentioned when lens was with which film. Be curious to see similar test with the same lens swappes between bodies, or at least the same generation of lens shared.

I think anyone interested in an Intrepid camera has watched the RUclips unboxings/reviews, and has read the numerous reviews with pictures of unboxing. The cameras, often sent to reviewers for free, come in nice packaging, with each accessory carefully packaged for protection in transit. So, imagine my disappointment to receive the 4x5 Black Edition--which costs even more than the regular version--with three lens boards, only to discover that the camera was stuffed into a block of foam but no Intrepid box as shown in all of those reviews, and the lens boards weren't in any way wrapped, but rather were just tossed into the box naked to rub against and scratch the crap out of each other in shipping. I reached out to Intrepid to see if they had perhaps sent me used/returned merchandise, but I was assured that everything, including the lens boards, is new, and that they don't actually put their wares in any sort of branded packaging for direct-sale, PAYING customers. Given that so many of those free cameras sent out to RUclipsrs came in nice, branded packaging, all of this seems like a dishonest bait-and-switch. With the distrust I now have for this company, any shortcomings of the camera's design and construction are going to seem magnified exponentially, as every flaw will come with the stain of suspicion that it's the result of apathetic and even dishonest business practices across the board.

Love this video, because it proves that the general rule of thumb for overexposing expired film tends to be correct, including for slidefilm. Lots of people say never overexpose slide film even if expired, but ive personally found that every roll of expired slide i shot always wanted more light than box, some by a stop, some by 2. of course, nothing beats actually testing the roll if you have the luxury to waist a few frames (or another roll spare!). Colours look great, thanks for the video

thanks Jess. What an endevour.LF photography is like meditation and thoughtful reflection. it looks like we need to do lots of home work to get the shot we want because of the constraints imposed by the camera and film.Nevetheless one day every thing will fall in place.I thought I would like to add something more.Use of Polarizing filter will take away the reflextion.ND filter will deal with light from above.unnoticed subjects could have saved your day like the mushroom on the bark of the tree which would not shake with breeze/ wind. Something to bear in mind when the film is only two or max four.
